What’s the trouble at Nvidia?

August 1st, 2008

In 2006 I put some of my retirement eggs into the Nvidia (NVDA) basket and so far it looks like I might have to keep working. Apparently a design flaw in a lot of recently released Nvidia graphics chips causes them to overheat and fail…D’oh. To make matters worse many of these chips are integrated into notebook computers and which makes them both hard and expensive to replace. Read the rest of this entry »

Hauppauge has just released the worlds first commercially available HD Component video capture device (review & unboxing). The HD PVR is selling right now and I want one before the MPAA shuts them down. SageTV has already announced that the new HD PVR will work with their Media Center application and I can’t wait to try it out. I’ll keep you posted with updates when I get my hands on one.

Dell PowerVault RD1000 removable disk storage - What a joke!

July 17th, 2008

A while back when I bought a small business server for a client, this removable disk storage device seemed like a relatively inexpensive backup option compatible with Backup Exec 12. In truth, device is a glorified SATA to USB converter that accepts overpriced SATA notebook hard disks in a proprietary plastic enclosure. Best of all only about half of the advertised cartridge sizes are actually available for purchase from the Dell store. Read the rest of this entry »

HOWTO: Virtualize your old computer

July 17th, 2008

Virtualization is process of separating a computer system from its underlying platform resources. In other words taking a system off of its existing hardware platform and letting it run on virtual resources. With today’s multi-core computers it has become easy to consolidate several older systems into one. The lost art of customer service - found at Microsoft

July 15th, 2008

Working in the IT/IS industry for 10 years has exposed me to my fair share of bad customer service. While the causes are a plenty, I also think the language barrier created by outsourcing has created a higher percentage of unhappy customers. That’s why I found myself pleasantly surprised by the professionalism and courtesy of the customer service representative that helped me cancel my Hotmail Plus subscription. Anheuser-Busch: Show me the money!

July 15th, 2008

After rejecting a hostile takeover bid of $46b or $65/share from competitor InBev (the Belgian brewing giant) on grounds that Anheuser-Busch should remain an American staple firmly grounded in the Show-Me State, Anheuser-Busch executives accept a sweetened $52b or $70/share buyout bid. I guess money trumps patriotism at around 6 additional bucks a share.

HP: Hmm, how can we complicate printer installations?

July 1st, 2008

I’ve worked with HP Printers my entire career. Lets face it, they’re still the gold standard in laser printing. So when it became time to my refresh my organizations printers I found HP had made some changes to their 2000, 3000, and 4000 lines of laser printers.
