In 2006 I put some of my retirement eggs into the Nvidia (NVDA) basket and so far it looks like I might have to keep working. Apparently a design flaw in a lot of recently released Nvidia graphics chips causes them to overheat and fail…D’oh. Hauppauge has just released the worlds first commercially available HD Component video capture device (review & unboxing). The HD PVR is selling right now and I want one before the MPAA shuts them down. SageTV has already announced that the new HD PVR will work with their Media Center application and I can’t wait to try it out. I’ll keep you posted with updates when I get my hands on one.
A while back when I bought a small business server for a client, this removable disk storage device seemed like a relatively inexpensive backup option compatible with Backup Exec 12. In truth, device is a glorified SATA to USB converter that accepts overpriced SATA notebook hard disks in a proprietary plastic enclosure. Virtualization is process of separating a computer system from its underlying platform resources. In other words taking a system off of its existing hardware platform and letting it run on virtual resources. With today’s multi-core computers it has become easy to consolidate several older systems into one. Working in the IT/IS industry for 10 years has exposed me to my fair share of bad customer service. While the causes are a plenty, I also think the language barrier created by outsourcing has created a higher percentage of unhappy customers. That’s why I found myself pleasantly surprised by the professionalism and courtesy of the customer service representative that helped me cancel my Hotmail Plus subscription. After rejecting a hostile takeover bid of $46b or $65/share from competitor InBev (the Belgian brewing giant) on grounds that Anheuser-Busch should remain an American staple firmly grounded in the Show-Me State, Anheuser-Busch executives accept a sweetened $52b or $70/share buyout bid. I guess money trumps patriotism at around 6 additional bucks a share.
