This is a story about a little girl who threw a rock and broke my car’s windshield. It happened in a corporate parking lot adjacent to an apartment complex separated by a 7 foot retention wall. The girl who threw the rock had never seen the parking lot and I’d never seen the apartment complex. Chance would bring us together over a broken windshield. Read the rest of this entry »

When Steve Ballmer made his initial offer of $31 bucks per share for the struggling Internet company I wasn’t the only one who thought it was above market price. This sentiment was most heartfelt by Microsoft’s own shareholders who dumped $24 billion dollars worth of company stock after learning about the deal. I’m sure that on the inside many Yahoo share holders felt the same way, yet no one at Yahoo was going to admit it publicly. Doing so would be admitting to both Yahoo’s failure as a company and the need for a bailout. The problem here is one of pride, the personal pride of Yahoo’s CEO, shareholders and employees. Once that pride had been injured, no $2 extra bucks per share were gonna put humpty back together again. So, what’s the moral of the story? Read the rest of this entry »

For the past 2 years I’ve lived here, my apartment complex has felt safe, but recently I’ve noticed some strange new behaviors among residents that have made me worry. First I noticed this guy going through the recycle bins of my complex sorting out cans & bottles and stuffing them into his car’s trunk. Spotting someone going through the recycling bins would not in itself have been a strange sight but seeing this well dressed young man systematically hitting all recycling bins and sorting cans and bottles into a late model Suburban did seem pretty strange. In addition to plenty of “for sale” signs in the windows of brand new larger trucks and SUV’s there’s also an increasing number of vacant apartments with eviction notices. But what really said it all was the gaping hole in my girlfriends car window and subsequently missing GPS unit this morning. The party is over folks, people are really starting to feel the pain of economic hardship. Read the rest of this entry »

Today I got a letter from Verizon stating (and I quote): “We are writing to inform you that the rate for your High Speed Internet package is changing to $31.99* per month. *Additional surcharges, taxes and fees may apply.” Up until receipt of this notice I had been paying $19.99 per month for what can at best be described as intermittent dial-up service at a blazing 768Kbps down/128Kbps up. Check out the full letter. Read the rest of this entry »

Like Bear Sterns I am also interested in your “company bailout” program recently advertised on national TV and Radio. I have run into a situation where I feel I may be unable to meet my obligations due to some uncertainty in the stock market and definitely not because of any stupid decisions I’ve made. I look forward to having my worthless assets backed by 29 billion dollars.

I got a Sony VAIO with a built in SD Card and MemoryStickTM slot. Since I’m running VISTA, I thought I’d utilize one of these slots along with a large capacity MemoryStickTM or SD card as a ReadyBoost device. My dilemma: Although there are plenty of sites that tell you which SD cards will work with ReadyBoost, none of them tell you which SDHC card or a MemoryStickTM will work. Additionally, there’s no information on whether or not an SDHC card will work in a built in SD card slot. Well I tested it all, and here’s what I found… Read the rest of this entry »

I recently ran into a situation where email originating from a client was being rejected by AOL without error and spammed by Yahoo and Hotmail users (by spammed I mean email ended up in the designated junk email folder). Here’s how to fix that… Read the rest of this entry »

Before I start my rant, I’d like to mention that I’m still pleased with the overall functionality of Google Apps and I’ve posted to that effect here. That said, here are the 2 things that suck about Google Apps and sadly convinced me to close my Google Apps account. Read the rest of this entry »
